Caprice Carthans came out to her mother at age 11. With her mother’s support, she transitioned and started her advocacy within her family circle. Caprice has volunteered for many community agencies including AIDS Foundation of Chicago, Chicago House, and Heartland Alliance. She is employed at South Side Help Center and has received awards as 2017 National Transgender Testing Day Advocate, 2018 Betty Smith Awards, 2019 Trans Day of Remembrance Leader and the Chicago Department of Public Health HIV Trailblazer. She was featured in Kehrer Verlag’s 2018 book “To Survive on This Shore.”
