The Chicago Gender Society (CGS) was founded in May 1987 for transgender education and support. CGS provides a safe space for transgender people to explore their gender identity through monthly meetings, socials, and events. The group’s meetings provide members and guests an opportunity to network with other individuals exploring similar feelings. Some events feature educational programs from experts in fields of interest to our members. Monthly socials provide an evening out with members and friends in a public environment.
The Chicago Gender Society is organized and operated for social, charitable and educational purposes. The goal of CGS is to provide social and educational activities for its members, the transgender community and its supporters, and the general public. CGS seeks to promote a positive self-image for transgender individuals in the business community, in the media, and among the general public.
CGS exists to serve the members in four areas: (1) To offer safe semi-public educational activities for members and the opportunity to meet others with similar interests, build their confidence, and perfect their presentation. (2) To educate the general public in order to dispel fear, ignorance and promote acceptance of transgender people. (3) To provide educational programs to educate, assist and support all its members. (4) To develop a growing leadership and volunteer base that will expand this work.
CGS has supported other LGBT organizations such as Equality Illinois and the Human Rights Campaign. CGS has had floats in the Chicago Pride Parade for some 30 years (about 30) and has participated in the Buffalo Grove Pride Parade since its inception. CGS has provided speakers at colleges and universities to educate the public about the transgender journey, and its members have guest hosted at the annual Reeling Film Festival.
